The watch belonged to the President and Vice President of the Dominican Republic, Gregorio Luperon (1839-1897). The 20th President of the Dominican Republic (1879-1880) and Vice President of the Dominican Republic (1865). This watch was given as a gift for the safe delivery of the president's first daughter from the President to Dr. Felipe B. Cordero & Escalona (1870-1922). The president's personal family practitioner. It features a massive four piece solid 18k yellow gold case most likely made for the Spanish market. It measures 55.00mm and is finely chased and engraved with a double sided design. One side is beautifully decorated with the Dominican Republic Coat of Arms "Dios, Patria, Libertad" (God, Homeland, Liberty) while the opposite side is engraved with G.L. (President Gregorio Luperon) initials. Both crests are framed with a wonderfully inspired mariner rope borders, Serial #15043. Engraved on the inside of the cases Remontoir Perpetual DEMI Chronometer Repetition A Cinq Minutes, the cuvette is engraved with exposition medals. This case comes with Benjamin Haas Patented case/movement winding system #3945 from 1873 in which the mainspring is wound/activated with the front cover opening and closing (each cycle gives the movement up to 4 hours of running time). It is still in good working condition. It has a rare high grade Swiss five minute repeating movement by Haas with fausses cotes decoration, 31 jewels, straight line calibrated lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance with blued steel Breguet balance spring, repeating on gongs through activating slide in the band. The movement is not running and it will need an overhaul in order to keep accurate time. This model features a double dial combination with two independent porcelain dials, one for time and the other for the Quantieme Perpetual calendar, flanked on two sides. The time only dial has a simple black Roman numeral index design with offset sub seconds at 9:00 o'clock. It is accompanied with a Masterful/Beautiful Perpetual Calendar Moon Phase Dial signed "B. Haas Jeune & Co. Geneve/Paris Quantieme Perpetual" with three subsidiary dials for month, day, moon phases and framed with 31 day outer chapter calendar ring. Luperón, Gregorio (September 8, 1839 – May 21, 1897) Afro-Dominican leading soldier and patriot, military general and statesman who was one of the leaders in the restoration of the Dominican Republic after the Spanish annexation in 1863. He was Vice President (January 24, 1865 – March 24, 1865) and 20th President of the Dominican Republic (December 6, 1879 – September 1st, 1880). In the early 1880’s, he served as a diplomat in Paris, representing the democratically elected government of his successor, Father Fernando Arturo de Meriño (1833-1906). He remains one of the greatest heroic figure of his country. Benjamin Haas patented winding-mechanism by closing the cover, “remontoir perpétuel à décrochement” In 1867, Benjamin Haas patented an interesting winding mechanism by closing the cover, which transmits the power via two levers to a ratchet wheel on the barrel arbour with a safety device disengaging the mechanism when fully wound. The design was quite successful, and Haas employed it in some of his best watches, mostly with horological complications. The initial idea was progressively improved, and the one employed in the 1890’s is a well-developed system with a 36-hour power reserve generated by only twelve closings. To accomplish this, Haas changed the going train, adding an additional wheel, which allowed him three hours winding by a single closing. He also designed a safety device disengaging the mechanism when fully wound, which was necessary to prevent damage to the cover. Among the twenty or so known pieces with “remontoir perpétuel à décrochement”, the present watch is one of the four most complicated known today from this series.
