Evans & Associates, Virginia, 17 Oct 2020, est $2-3,000, "HAAS NEVEUX & CIE SWISS 18K GOLD CASE MINUTE REPEATER POCKET WATCH, white enamel dial with an Arabic chapter ring, having two subsidiary dials indicating 30 minutes register and constant seconds, housed in an open-face 18K yellow gold case featuring blue enameled monogram to exterior, cuvette with engine-engraved border surrounding "MON B. HAAS JNE / HAAS NEVEUX & CIE SRS / GENEVE - PARIS". Interior case cover and interior cuvette each marked with "0.750 / 18K" flanked by two Swiss Helvetia hallmarks having "G" marks for the city of Geneve in addition to "19578" serial number and a French owl hallmark, case cover also marked "HN&Co / G". Total weight: 82.0 grams. Circa 1900. Case 45.5 mm. Very good overall condition with minor wear, spots of surface scratches notably along edges top open cover, cuvette with streak of scratches through center. HAAS NEVEUX & CIE, Geneva & Paris, minute repeater and split-second chrono- graph with 30-minute register, No. 19578,c. 1900, 18K gold case, enamel dial, 45.5mm, The caseback was enameled with entangled letters, possibly spelling "Arthur." Collector Notes: This watch belonged to Arthur Erich Haas, an Austrian physicist who pioneered a new approach in early quantum theory.' Dr. Haas fled to Ameri- ca from the University of Vienna in fear of Nazi Germany. With a recommendation let- ter from Albert Einstein, Dr. Haas became a professor at Notre Dame University until his death in 1941. The watch was passed down to his younger son and daughter-in-law, the late Dr. George A. Haas and Mary Jane Haas, who lived in Alexandria, Virginia.
