Haas, Geneva, mid 19th century the cover painted en plein with a portrait of Nasser-ed-din Shah, wearing uniform and the Order of the Lion and the Sun, within a rose diamond-set frame and a dark blue enamel taille d'épargne ivory leaf border, the reverse painted on translucent scarlet over sunray engine-turning with the Lion and Sun emblem of Iran within ribbon-tied laurel, nickel lever bar form movement, jewelled up to the centre, bi-metallic compensation balance, signed cuvette, enamel dial with roman numerals, outer arabic chapter ring, subsidiary seconds Dimensions: diameter 5cm, 2 in Notes: Nasser-ed-Din Shah (1831-1896, reigned 1848-1896) was the longest-reigning ruler of the Qajar dynasty in Persia. He believed strongly in encouraging closer links between Persia and Europe, links which he was convinced would be beneficial to both. He looked forward to seeing his country achieve the best of the 19th century West while maintaining its own particular character. Politics and circumstances, however, prevented him from fully achieving his goals and he became resigned to only partial success well before an assassin's bullet terminated his life the day after his 65th birthday. "
